Thoughtful design, crafted for today.
Schabel is a Los Angeles architectural studio specializing in custom residential design. The homes we craft are beautiful, functional, and thoughtfully aligned with how our clients want to live. Homes that reflect individuality, dreams, and bold self-expression.

Each project is a journey shaped by diverse styles and a deep respect for its environment. We believe great design harmonizes a home with its setting, seamlessly integrating architecture, interiors, and landscape. Through careful consideration of circulation, light, materials, and landscaping, we blur the boundaries between indoors and outdoors, creating tranquil spaces deeply rooted in nature.

We celebrate diversity and foster an inclusive environment where LGBTQIA+ partners, team members, and collaborators are welcomed and valued. We believe diverse perspectives fuel creativity and lead to innovative solutions that reflect the vibrant communities we serve. Inclusivity ensures every voice is heard, and every idea contributes to the authenticity of our work.

At our core, we are partners in bringing unique visions to life. Through close collaboration with homeowners, builders, engineers, and consultants, we ensure every detail is intentional, original, and meaningful.

We invite you to collaborate with us. Let’s design your next home together.

James Guillou
Senior Associate

James joined Schabel Studio in early 2024. In his role as Senior Associate, he brings a distinct point of view and strong leadership skills to the studio.

Before joining the practice, James helped lead a boutique architecture and design firm where he served as Associate Principal overseeing a diverse range of residential, hospitality and commercial work across multiple scales and budgets. During his 11 year tenure his projects were widely published and have won numerous awards including five AIA architecture awards in Southern California and one National AIA design award.

Whether it be a high end restaurant, a bespoke home, or a modest ADU – James believes that good design is driven by a strong concept, outside-the-box thinking, and celebrates not just our own creative spirit but those we design for. His curiosity, keen attention to detail, and broad experience across design disciplines – from furniture to graphics to landscape design – informs his holistic approach and breadth of technical expertise he brings to every project.

Chris Cortez
Project Manager & Technical Lead

Chris joined Schabel Studio in early 2025, bringing a decade of experience across residential and commercial architecture. Growing up around construction, he developed an early understanding of how buildings come together, giving him a practical lens on design. His expertise spans high-end homes, offices, and hospitality spaces, with a strong focus on constructability, materiality, and detailing.

As a project manager and technical lead, Chris ensures that design intent translates effectively into built work. He has contributed to several award-winning projects, and his work in digital fabrication was featured at Dwell on Design and remains installed at Woodbury University. Drawing from his background as a drummer, he sees architecture as a balance of structure and rhythm, knowing when to make a bold move and when to let the foundation carry the design forward.

For Chris, construction administration is where architecture is truly tested. Outside of work, he’s a family man, music lover, and coffee enthusiast. He is always drawing inspiration from the interplay of design, sound, and craft.

Design through collaboration.

We believe the best spaces emerge from true partnership. Collaborating closely with homeowners, builders, artists, engineers, and consultants allows us to focus on the craft of architecture and construction, ensuring every detail is intentional and every vision is realized.
